An orb of darkness pierced the mundane emptiness of the unoccupied cave, depositing (as ever) the Vagrant Cleric, Aster. The AI stumbled forward before sluggishly recovering his balance and bringing a pale hand to his face. "Wh-what...?" His head was splitting. Aster blinked back the discomfort and finally took in his surroundings. "A field? Did I...fall asleep inside the g- ah!!" A new bolt of sharp, searing pain flew through his forehead.

"Wait..." What was going on here? The last thing he remembered was...was...

"I was...questing with Clara..." he began, voice measured and almost synthetically calm. "Wasn't I...?" If that was the case, where was she now? Why was he at the beginning of the field with a giant headache? Why couldn't he remember? Why the hell did everything feel so wrong?

It would be at this point that some mysterious, third-party figure (let's call them Reader) would be considering many courses of action in response to such a bizarre situation. Logging out, removing one's headset, checking one's account information or member addresses. Hell, even just leaving the field or taking a single second to note his goth makeover, anything. Suffice to say, if such thoughts were allowed to cross through the addled AI's mind, they would have. But no. It was as though the larger part of Aster's conscious thought was trapped behind a fog; any information that could pull him from this glitched state was carefully secured far from his reach.

And so he instead considered none of these things a moment further. "R-right...I must be preparing something for Clara here. Maybe I was scoping out a hot new quest or something?" This compliant thought seemed to satisfy whatever was thrumming against his skull, as the pain subsided and Aster found his stance relaxing. "But I always get too excited and run in on my own, just to get my healer ass kicked," he conceded with a soft, light-hearted sigh. "Let's just wait for a minute. See if anyone needs a hand here or...something."

"Yeah..."

"I shall not fear the truth."

A clay pot followed a curved trajectory as it magnificently made its landing on 'Shirime' with a loud thud.

"Stop slacking off, find the ingredients to brew the sake already!"

The NPC [Head Cook] came running towards 'Shirime' to pick his clay pot up.

"...Oh. It's you."

The Head Cook NPC made a face when he saw Shirime, clearly expressing his disapproval of such unique features that seemed a little too inconvenient to have even as a true-blooded Yokai.

"I DON'T CARE IF YOUR EYE IS STUCK IN YOUR ASS AS LONG AS YOU. GET. BACK. TO WORK." Panic returned to the volume of his voice, roaring and echoing in the already busy kitchen. "You, you, and you, all of you! Don't you have a sense of urgency?! We want to make Lord Orochi happy with our beyond satisfactory sake, and we don't have much time left to prepare them now! Hurry!"

It waddled back to its post, churning a huge pot of suspicious substance with its very long paddle.

Macaron the Player Character had picked 'Nekomata' as her disguise for this particular event, and had witnessed this little scene unfolding before she approached the player Aster, who had a little piece of paper stuck to his forehead with Shirime written on it. That was... An interesting choice, but this was the internet and you could always expect to bump into weirdos.

"You okay?"

And after making sure he was okay, she greeted him a temporary and polite good bye as she got to work. There were 8 sake types they needed to brew in order to complete this quest. Each of them required different ingredients which they had to look for, then brew into a specific type of sake.

With that summary completed in her head, she bowed to every player she could notice that were present within the vicinity. "Let's work hard together!"

And off she went, rechecking the listed requirements for the quest as she made her way towards the shelves lined up around the kitchen.

"Ah, I knew I should not have gotten involved..."

Count - or, as he would be known here, Nobiagari - walked in just in time to have his hearing caressed by the dulcet tones of Cook, who was, evidently, the chef NPC of this strange area. Perhaps next time, he would be wise enough not to enter strange fields that people had publicized the keywords to on the BBS. Perhaps, he would stay away from event fields in the future.

I suppose Nifl Phant was an anomalously pleasant place to be. Noted.

"... But I suppose I, too, have work to do," he quietly concluded as he followed Macaron to the kitchen. She looked like she knew what she was doing, so, clearly, nothing bad could happen if he was to follow her lead.

Count regarded the quest requirements on his UI. He looked around. He saw the pottery that the oni stored their ingredients in, and he judged it lacking.

But there was no clay here to make cuter pots out of, and the game wouldn't let him. There was no time for procrastination - he had to get to work, since he'd already gotten himself into this mess.

(Somehow, just leaving didn't occur to him.)

After digging around, he'd found what he was looking for - parchment! Ostensibly for baking, but he'd needed to write love letters, and surely, no one'd mind if he used this weird liquid for the job. He reached over to pluck a quill from the rear of a hanging basan that wasn't yet prepared into a meal, dipped it into a pot of liquid that was, ostensibly and hopefully, suspiciously red squid ink, and got to work.

It was best not to leave the embarrassing parts for last, and since they were all in this together, he would help the rest of those present procure some of the ingredients, as a good team player should.

Soon, Count wordlessly offered pieces of parchment to Aster and Macaron respectively, his expression screaming "please, for the love of everything holy, don't ask what the fuck is wrong with me".

Dear Shirime,

I have always been enamored with the gleam of the beautiful orb lodged 'twixt thine cheeks, thy arse pale white like the moon. It is a sight I cannot forget no matter how much I try - perhaps that is because I do not wish to forget? O, Shirime, please, let me lick thy eyeball. I beg, I beg of thee, it haunts my dreams, I cannot stand the burning desire!

Souma knew that he lived with a dork, but sometimes he forgot just how big of a dork he lived with. Thus, after a minute of giggling while peeking at the screen, he had logged in and headed for the event field as well, in hopes he'd make it into the same instance as he'd observed...

And so, here Incubus was! With an amulet that said "Yamabiko" on itself slapped over his face, hiding his features from view. Surely, his horns wouldn't break the immersion - there probably was a horned variation of this youkai out there somewhere!

"Hello, all. Let's work hard together and make this worth all our whiles, hm~? Especially Lord Orochi's, naturally." He greeted everyone present, shot a message to Nobiagari-Count, and got to work on finding the ingredients. The igredients that weren't silly love letters. Those ingredients. Anything but the love letters. He wouldn't be able to hold a straight face, for sure.

Well, that was unexpected; he did hear rumors about someone being suddenly thrust to make a brew for the gods, with no way out more or less until you are essentially done with the task, or perhaps, quest for the better word. Now tired of simply taking pretty pictures ingame and posting it on instagram, Azrael decided to finally try levelling, and fully experience The World, and enjoy the other angles he has yet to explore.[break][break]

Now, he was actually stuck, stuck with making some sort of special sake for some feast, a feast for a being called Orochi. Orochi, now wasn't that the name of the mythological serpent in Japanese legends?[break]
"Interesting," Brow raised, the white-haired male quietly accepted the challenge, seeing this was just a fun beginning to his forage beyond the Root Towns, and perhaps, more places he could take screenshots to share on his social media.[break][break]

What is even better? There happens to be company too, an interesting bunch, noting each one of their names, Aster, Macaron, Count and Incubus.[break]

Aster had hardly finished speaking when the Head Cook hurtled the clay pot at his head. The item connected cleanly, as one would expect from an AI trajectory, and shattered on Aster's head before dissolving into shimmering data particles.

"OWW!!"

Instinctively reaching a hand to rub the affected area of his noggin, the boy whispered a few unsavory words under his breath. As his hand returned to his side, however, Aster couldn't avoid noticing that it was covered and dripping with crimson red. A look of alarm flashed across the Cleric's face, but the moment he blinked, any evidence of what he'd seen vanished. His hand appeared normal once more. "Huh." If he'd ever been moving at all in the direction of questioning the fact that he just experienced real pain, the odd latter events had succeeded in glossing over it.

Given what had just happened, it took several moments for Aster's mind to catch up to what the Head Chef had just said. "My eye stuck in my WHAT?" First this NPC hit him and now he was hitting on him? What the hell was this place? Maybe it wasn't such a good match for him and Zylphia's next adventure in The World.

As he turned to leave the area, he came face-to-face with the first additional arrival, Macaron. "Oh, um...I guess," he spluttered in response to her checking on him. Apparently satisfied, the girl headed off toward the kitchen, and so did some other guy that Aster was just now noticing. Dazed, he fell in line alongside them and began inspecting the kitchen's contents. "Right. We're making stuff."

So much for leaving, it would seem.

Considering how utterly out of sorts he'd been so far, Aster decided now was a good time to take a deep breath and get his shit together. He was really on to a somewhat promising start, too, when Count approached him and awkwardly handed him...

...

He looked up at the deliverer of the letter, staring at him in utter blank surprise for just long enough to be noted. He was about to open his mouth when another arrival, Incubus, filled the silence. Recalling everything that had happened up to now, Aster was grateful for the relatively normal reminder of the task before this sudden and ragtag little gang.

A final face joined the crowd at the last moment, quite the interesting looking fellow who quickly introduced himself to the group as Azrael. Having now observed two relatively normal introductions, Aster finally felt confident enough to speak himself. "H...hey all! I'm Aster," he began, still admittedly rather sheepish about all this. "Not gonna lie, I'm pretty...confused. But let's do our best!"

Finally grounding himself in the purpose of this quest, Aster briefly recounted his general goal and how to go about it. Reviewing the necessary ingredients for each brew, the letter he found himself in possession of suddenly made more sense. Marginally. Did he need to write one himself? Let's go ahead and think about that later. Moving on, Aster settled upon preparing something different. "I'll, uh, do the Snow Brew!"

He then set about finding the Snow Chimchim. Would it really just conveniently be on the shelves, or would things get complicated?

"I shall not fear the truth."

She was rummaging through random shelves of interactive objects in the hope of finding relevant ingredients within a reasonable timeframe. Her plan was to proceed based on which ingredient she would encounter first, since she judged it to be a more efficient way of task division.

"You must really like cats," she humored Nobiagari-Count's love letter with a genuine laughter, clearly entertained by the contrast between the passion expressed in the letter she read and his almost-deadpan speech patterns and tone. though she wasn't going to comment on what she assumed was a joke letter written for Shirime-Aster in honor of his daring choice of yokai disguise. Not too long afterwards, the team welcomed the arrival of Yamabiko-Incubus, and a little later of a man referring to himself as Azrael whose yokai disguise Macaron couldn't quite figure out yet. Nevertheless, it was polite to greet them, so she did.

Being the aesthetics-connoisseur that she was, she blinked a few times after greetings were exchanged, slowly scanning her team members' high-quality PCs. The realization of the good-looking customization and the HD graphics in [The World] once again dawned upon her. If she had only spent a few more days before clicking 'confirm' on her own customization screen, perhaps she, too, would end up with an ikemen PC.

But enough of that; she had to continue staying on task if they wanted to get anywhere with this particular quest. With a little bit of luck, she spotted a row of yellowish substance sealed within clear glass jars. She opened one and her UI immediately showed 'Yellow Sludge' on its item description box. She cross-checked it and found that it was a match to one of the ingredients they needed for a Thunder Brew.

"Then I'll be working on the Thunder Brew for all of us."

Name: Brew for the Gods
Summary: You have entered the mysterious Moon Cave, but it seems everyone is too busy with preparations for Lord Orochi’s ceremony to pay you any mind. Cook, the resident chef in charge, on the other hand, is thrilled at the appearance of free labor and immediately puts you to work in creating the last item needed to complete Lord Orochi's feast: Ritual Sake. The quest is triggered immediately after stepping into the first subarea of Moon Cave. The chef npc will rush you down and demand your help in the kitchen. It is best you listen to his demands because remember: you're pretending to be some sort of Oni to get into the dungeon and you don't want any of the dungeon's residents to become suspicious of you! Unless you hide yourself, leaving and returning to the area will always draw Cook's attention and he will ask you for the progress of your task every time.

The reactions to his letters were about what he expected, though he thought Aster would've been a little more stoic about it, and he thought Macaron would be far more scandalized than amused. Showed what he knew about people - it was impossible to accurately judge anybody by their looks in [The World]. A young-looking Lei cat beastman could well be a MMO veteran with ten years of raiding experience under her belt, a strange Harvest Cleric could well be someone who doesn't talk to people often and is actually, say, thirteen IRL.

Incubus' arrival was not unexpected, considering Count had shown him the letters he was writing just then. It wasn't hard to set up his game display to output both to his FMD and to his monitor if it was for Incubus' benefit.

I could have left. But I have already committed. I cannot back out. My honor as an artisan is at stake here.

If he had to be honest with himself, he would admit that he was hoping he could bait Incubus into joining him there, eventually. He hadn't expected him to get online right away to come and join him in this quest, but it was a pleasant development.

"While I am here, I am Nobiagari. Pleased to meet you. I will now be returning to work," he informed the rest of his kitchen coworkers.

He picked up another couple sheets of parchment, and returned to writing love letters in what he was now certain was actually fish blood.

For once, Count was most glad he couldn't smell anything in the game.

My dear Yamabiko,

The echo of your voice is downright sublime when we [purposefully smeared "ink"], or when you [smear] me after [smear]. Have you considered testing out the acoustic qualities of our bathroom? I think it'd be nice if we [smeaaaaaar] together.

Another person appeared before Incubus could decide on what he'd get up to. He straightened up, gave this new arrival a bright smile, and waved his hand merrily. Best not look too rude right off the bat!

"Ah, yes. I'm Yamabiko, as you may have noticed! Welcome to the group, my oddly un-youkai-acting youkai friends!"

This Aster person made him a little curious. It's not as though someone could stumble into this quest area by accident... right? Incubus paused to contemplate the scenario. Maybe it was possible, if someone made a habit of not reading what they were actually going to be doing...?

Was that what this Azrael person had also done, then? Neither of them seemed sure what they were doing, disguise-wise. Even though it appeared that Aster had been... more or less assigned one.

His thoughts were rudely interrupted by the love letter Count delivered to him with very little ceremony. Incubus blinked, took a look at the piece of parchment, and... his face went red, in and out of the game.

"C---Nobiagari! Seriously..." Incubus eyed Count as he walked off. "... But it looks like there's still one letter to be written. I'll take care of that, I guess."

How hard could writing a love letter be? He's written a plenty of letters before! Besides, look at what Count wrote him!

However, when he got the parchment he needed for the job, and found the red ink and the quill that his partner in crime had been using, his mind went blank. Suddenly, the words that he usually had a more than he knew what to do with were all gone. There were butterflies in his stomach, and he felt ridiculous.

Ugh! What the hell, it's not like it has to be all that serious!

Frowning, he hunched over the parchment and started writing. Slowly, but surely the letter started forming...

My lovely Nobiagari, my heart,

You are such a jerk, sometimes, and yet I admire even that side of you. Though you strive to appear cool and collected, I think you're really cute. Eyeing his handiwork, he tapped himself on the still-warm cheek, took in a breath, and sought Count out again. He'd slip him the letter before making himself scarce, going to try his luck at finding Will-o-wisps.

If nothing else, Incubus hoped the letter would at least make Count blush.

Aster scanned the shelves as carefully as he could, while keeping a portion of his awareness reserved for the words and actions of his companions.

The sweet-looking girl who had yet to give a name, real or fake, was working on their Thunder Brew. There was a confidence to her actions here; she almost reminded him of a protagonist from a series of alchemy games Clara played. "Nobiagari" and "Yamabiko" had both sought out some parchment to complete the remaining love letters, before wordlessly moving on. The Cleric could only guess they'd gone off to find stuff. Which stuff, though? He supposed he'd bump into them if he happened to be after the same thing, anyway.

Azrael was moving slowly, but that was just fine. Perhaps he was working on the Peach Brew, since all the love letters had been assembled.

And as Aster might have known from the start, the Snow Chimchim he was seeking was not on the shelves at all. "Perfect." He sighed and hung his head slightly, suddenly making eye contact with a trace of snow on the ground. Had that always been there? "How random and unrelated. Heh."

Without wasting another moment, he took a step towards the snow. As soon as he did, another few snowflakes appeared and trailed off before him. With a victorious smirk, he picked up into a run and had soon left the main room and rounded a corner. As the hidden nook came into view, so too did an almost glowing, white Chimchim. "Aha!" As soon as he spoke, the Chim gave a startled squeak and ran towards the far wall. Not very smart, eh? Aster sprinted forward to catch the creature, and...

Suddenly the ground underneath one of his feet lit up with a blue, rune-like chim icon. Immediately, he was encased in a pillar of freezing ice. The Chim cackled impishly and dashed off, right past the immobile AI and out into the main room. A few seconds passed before the frigid cage expired, and Aster found himself shouting through chattered teeth, "Oh, it's on now, you little piece of--"

To anyone who had been paying attention, they would suddenly see a very pleased Snow Chim hurry into the room followed by a very embarrassed Aster. "I GOT IT DON'T WORRY!" A comical chase ensued for almost a full minute, an at least vaguely familiar sight to any R:2 players, before he finally got close enough to give the Chim a decisive kick.

His initial goal complete, Aster immediately doubled over and gasped for air. The chase had taken a lot out of him, something that again should probably have struck him as maybe possibly just a little odd? "Alright...okay...I got the goods." The boy wearily approached one of the many mixing pots, tossed in the Snow Chimchim, and grabbed a large spoon.

A letter, a private message from one of the unwitting (?) participants in this preparation of what appears to be alcohol as far as he can smell, this coming from the one labelled Count, or as he is calling himself in the letter, Nobiagari. Not that he is interested in prying, as he isn't into prying the privacy for now (he would usually be curious, but that is not the main focus, and he just wants to see the end of whatever this event is).[break][break]

"The job of locating the Caged Ghost shall be mine. Best of luck everybody," Spooky ingredients, and the Twin Blade was already driven hard by whatever is out there awaiting him. The ingredients were weird, and the weirdness is only getting weirder with the weird but amusing letter he got.

Staying focused on her tasks, Macaron finished brewing the Thunder Brews in no time at all.

She wasn't an extremely vocal individual, but she was observant and a good listener. She took a mental note at what each participating member in their little group of chaos did or were doing, pulled up the quest description on her UI again as she gave it a skim to see what else she could do for the team. She decided to aim for the Wailing Bats, following the clues and hints she could pick up from the area as she eventually came across wailing creatures at the corner.

Courageously rummaging through the containers and traps, she eventually came across the required ingredients and did not hesitate to grab them with her bare hands.

"I found the Wailing Bats!" she announced, excitement and the drive to have the party finish their collective tasks compelled her to stuff the struggling, wailing bats into her pouch that acted as her inventory. "Then, I'm going to start working on the Moon Brews. Please leave it to me."

With that, in something that was akin to a cruel move, she threw the bats - still wailing - into a cauldron filled up with copious amounts of suspicious boiling substance. She watched the bats drown and struggle inside the pot with a cheerful smile on her face, feeling accomplished that the progress gauge on her brews showed that they were near their completion.

Name: Brew for the Gods
Summary: You have entered the mysterious Moon Cave, but it seems everyone is too busy with preparations for Lord Orochi’s ceremony to pay you any mind. Cook, the resident chef in charge, on the other hand, is thrilled at the appearance of free labor and immediately puts you to work in creating the last item needed to complete Lord Orochi's feast: Ritual Sake. The quest is triggered immediately after stepping into the first subarea of Moon Cave. The chef npc will rush you down and demand your help in the kitchen. It is best you listen to his demands because remember: you're pretending to be some sort of Oni to get into the dungeon and you don't want any of the dungeon's residents to become suspicious of you! Unless you hide yourself, leaving and returning to the area will always draw Cook's attention and he will ask you for the progress of your task every time.

Did this Azrael fellow not read the quest conditions or something? Did he... did he think that the love letter was unironically, sincerely, honestly meant for him, or was he---what did they call that, "shitposting"? probably shitposting---in response to him? Count privately rolled his eyes while taking a moment to read the message he'd received in response, and shoot a response in return.

I don't understand what your unfulfilled juvenile desire to touch a boob has to do with my desire to complete this quest in a way that doesn't drive me insane. Allow me some fun and touch grass.

Count had been so eager to gather bats that he forgot, in his haste to make contact with his fellow members of the order Chiroptera, that he should've probably told somebody what he was doing. He hadn't, though, and he hadn't realized the implications, the far-reaching consequences of his neglect to verbalize his intent, until he'd returned to the kitchen and saw "Nekomata" fully endowed with all the bats she needed for her brew.

Which is to say that he'd spent some time grabbing bats one by one, plucking them from low patches of the ceiling and standing on objects where he needed a lift, abusing his tall person privileges to their fullest. He had a veritable armful of fat, screaming bats, and he stepped back into the cooking hellzone.

"Ah. I think the proper way to explain how I feel right now is by saying, "balls". Therefore, balls."

Count sighed, let his arms drop, and released the screaming bats.

Which immediately took to flapping around and colliding with objects while trying to find a place to hide away from the light.

"I am your slave, your servant - and you, my seniors in quest task management, apparently. Tell me what to do lest this happens again."

To say he was mildly embarrassed by his own failing would be a slight overstatement - he was very, very, very slightly embarrassed. But it was there, somewhere, that burning sensation of having just shown his metaphorical entire ass to his questmates, somewhere adjacent to the faded memories of having shown his literal entire ass to his class during track.

That incident taught him that he shouldn't wedge himself into tight running shorts during his growth spurt and think that it'd be fine. This incident will teach him to communicate like a normal person with a mouth.

As always, Count had taken his efforts in a stride so efficient it looked as though he'd just been outright ignored. Of course, surely he hadn't been, so he supposed he shouldn't be immature and take it the wrong way...

Incubus glanced up with an armful of jars, noticing his partner's return swiftly thanks to the suddenly released screeching bats. He would've felt more sympathetic if he hadn't thought Count needed to be reminded to communicate. But he still felt a little sympathetic. Just a bit, though.

"We need Red Oni's Tears or Flaming Spiders," Incubus told him while forcibly taking will-o-wisps out of the jars he'd located in a forgotten corner of the kitchen and starting to jam them into a cauldron. He wondered if this made him look cruel. These were just animated models, but still... "I'm not your senior in basically anything, but why not go and take care of the tears? If you can't find any here, you'll probably figure out how to swiftly obtain them. You're smart. You could also go ahead and turn your letter into a brew, since we all have to do that sooner or later."

And since you're kind of mean, sometimes, you shouldn't have any problems with making an oni cry, he added in his head, unconsciously jamming a wisp into the cauldron with enough force to almost make it splatter onto the floor. Thankfully for his hide, it didn't. The chef would probably have tanned him, otherwise.

Much to the delight (and mild confusion) of the out-of-place-and-time Cleric, literally nobody seemed to notice his blunder through the kitchen. That worked for him. Deciding to focus on his task and not make any splashes in this group of individuals, he stirred the Snow Brew and allowed his mind to wander.

The more he did of this quest, the more it seemed like it could actually be a good fit for Clara. It was certainly unique, and the unceremonious beginning actually gave it a little charm in retrospect.

"Right, all done," he whispered to himself, knowing the others were too focused for conversation anyway. Aster took a moment to consider his next move, before deciding upon working on the Peach Brew. Wordlessly, he collected everyone's love notes and tossed them in a fresh pot. "On to the next."
