Here it was. A scene like every other MMO event Gestalt had ever participated in - or any games, for that matter. Some kind of special event area matched to the thematic importance of the event's context, special NPCs catered to liven the atmosphere. A huge cauldron placed right in the center of the Kitchen where this specific quest took place at. A screaming main NPC, looking pressured by the tasks still undone.

And there was Gestalt, giving the quest description another read so he could be fully sure of what to do in order to complete the quest efficiently.

"Alright, shall we get to work, gentlemen?" Gestalt did a little cat stretch, then looked over to the other two players present within the vicinity before jumping straight into the task: Brewing some sake. But before that, he had to find some ingredients specific to the recipes provided on the list. "I'll handle the Flame Brew for all of us first."

With methodical flair, he strolled through the rows of ceramic containers and inspected them one by one. If he kept at it for a bit, there was no way the game wouldn't eventually lead him to the required ingredients.

Summary: You have entered the mysterious Moon Cave, but it seems everyone is too busy with preparations for Lord Orochi’s ceremony to pay you any mind. Cook, the resident chef in charge, on the other hand, is thrilled at the appearance of free labor and immediately puts you to work in creating the last item needed to complete Lord Orochi's feast: Ritual Sake. The quest is triggered immediately after stepping into the first subarea of Moon Cave. The chef npc will rush you down and demand your help in the kitchen. It is best you listen to his demands because remember: you're pretending to be some sort of Oni to get into the dungeon and you don't want any of the dungeon's residents to become suspicious of you! Unless you hide yourself, leaving and returning to the area will always draw Cook's attention and he will ask you for the progress of your task every time.

Originally he had come here to investigate a player who had a complaint that they had completed the quest and the Chef NPC was still bothering them to do it, but after dropping the GM disguise, he was now entertaining the idea of completing it himself. It gave a fair amount of experience, and if he was going to look less conspicuous, he might as well get some levels under his belt. Beyond that, actually playing the game was what he wanted to do.

He had just started to peruse the shelves of ingredients when another player started speaking, and he turned to look at them. It seemed that some other players had joined him while he wasn't paying attention. Now, it was only the three of them here. He didn't mind participating with other players, not at all. That was the whole point of an MMO, and even if his experience in R:2 had practically been player cleanup crew, he was enjoying Fusion. "I can handle the [Shadow Brew]s," he told them both, affirming his position.

Looking through the ingredients stocked on the shelf, he perused the shelves for anything that looked like it might contain a [Caged Ghost] for the brew.

Ugh event areas. Even back when he was a kid, he had always thought these things were kinda corny. He was a solo player at heart, and events like these gave him the hibbie jibbies. Interacting with people wasn't a problem. It was the fact that most events involved less fighting and more fetch quests. Said quests made his brain feel like mush. He didn't mind repetitive tasks, but he preferred things that kept his brain engaged.

Gestalt nodded at another player's claim on one of the tasks. Now that there was a plan for the Flame Brew and Shadow Brew, he looked at Souichi with the expectation that his real-life friend would follow suit.

He thought wrong.

The white-clad Wavemaster was trapped in between wanting to smack Souichi half-dead and wanting to laugh at Souichi's signature brand of jokes [except, no, he really wasn't actually joking; he was serious]. This bastard's antics entertained Gestalt, truly; and it wasn't like the tasks were anything difficult to tackle between Gestalt himself and Chronos.

"Alright, fine, my liege, you can totally chill and leave these tasks for us to work on. That's not a problem at all."

His words were dripping in sarcastic loyalty, and as soon as an extended silence proved Souichi's absence from the game, Gestalt materialized his staff and brutally attacked Souichi until there was only a little bit of HP left on him. That was fine; if he stood there idly the HP would recover soon enough.

Now that he was satisfied, it was finally time to look for ingredients for real.

Walking through the shelves, he noticed the small NPCs around him making way for him as he proceeded - could it be because of his yokai disguise, Hakuja no Myojin? Were they also scared of snakes? Either way, it made it slightly easier for Gestalt to sift through the shelves. Rummaging for a while, he then noticed a group of small yokais struggling nearby, exclaiming 'hot! hot!' as they hopped around and continuously passed a wrapped package around to one another. His curiosity was piqued and he walked over to them, asked them for said container upon seeing how it was literally burning up in flames. And true enough, his astute suspicions were accurate: there were enough Flaming Spiders to be brewed into sake.

With that, he found a brewing station nearby and got to work on them.

Chronos raised an eyebrow at the Twin Blade. He didn't know either of these players, and already Souichi was proving to be a pain. Would he help out at all, or just leave it to the two of them to do all the work? Maybe they should make him do the one that required Love Letters, for the sake of being a pain in the ass.

However, Gestalt seemed to make his point clear. Chronos didn't even bother to speak up when the Wavemaster began to beat the other player with their staff repeatedly. It was actually sort of funny, though he'd step in and at least comment if it seemed like he might actually kill him. Though, he supposed, that would be one way to make sure that Souichi couldn't just mooch off of their hard work.

Shaking his head ot himself he began his search again.

As he neared one particular section, a quiet, haunting sort of call began to trigger in his headset. He moved a little further away and it grew quieter. Then he moved closer to where he had been headed and it grew louder. Ah, it must be the audio cue that he was getting closer to the item he needed. Slowly picking his way along, little by little the noise grew louder until he was looking at a particular section of little cages. Inside were various creatures of shapes and sizes and makes, comically shrunk down or squished behind the bars--like what appeared to be a slime of some sort, whose body was protruding from between the metal slats.

"Ah, here you are," he murmured to himself, reaching up and plucking an item off the shelf. Once in his inventory, it clearly identified itself as [Caged Ghost]. Moving to the brewing stand beside Gestalt, he began to compile the ingredients to make the second sake.

"Yo, what the hell!" exclaimed Souichi all of a sudden, "What the hell happened to my HP?!"

Souichi was sure that this current segment of the event didn't have any battles. His unexplained HP loss could only be attributed to player damage. His gaze shifted from his current blank stare to Chronos, eyeing the Flick Reaper with a look of suspicion. Level 1? Yeah, no, definitely not him. Which could only mean...

Somewhere in the background, the NPC quest giver could be heard shouting the usual "get back to work!" prompt when players were either AFK or doing something other than the actual quest itself. Souichi, the disruptive gremlin that he was, had half a mind to reprogram the annoying NPC with more obscene voice lines that were definitely not CERO C. Whatever. As far as the not-so-young hacker was concerned, he was going to hear the damn voice line for the next hour—give or take. Work was a concept reserved for his hours outside [The World].

In the corner of his eye, he spotted Chronos walking further away from his starting location. Turning his head to the opposite direction, he spotted his friend weaving in between various yokai. Eventually, the Wavemaster seemed to have found what he was looking for and headed to a brewing station with what looked like a wrapped package of fire.

Huh. Neat.

Making his way to his friend's brewing station, Souichi's short attention span was once again tested as some sort of screech/song hybrid made him pause mid-gait. It sounded like a lark to him. But why would a bird be in a cave? Video games, amirite? His eyes scanned the various shelves and containers, only to find the source of his curiosity. A bat. Wailing as if it were crying out to its mate.

Wasn't that one of the quest items they needed to brew one of the eight brews to complete the quest? Whatever it was, it was ANNOYING.

So once again ignoring said quest objectives, Souichi made his way to the busy Wavemaster, his HP already three-quarters full as he bobbed, weaved, and dodged the various yokai scurrying about. His friend was hard at work. Good for him!

"You gotta put your back into it." explained the freeloader, "There, that's it. There you go."

Gestalt was in the middle of brewing the Flame Brews when Souichi came over and encouraged him to work harder on his part, too. He made faces, but sighed and decided to send a particular brand of shivers down the Twin Blade's spine - he was excited to see how he would respond.

"Dude, go make yourself useful before that guy smashes into your face with his weapon - he looks like he's checking you out. How ever you'd like to interpret that 'weapon' in any way, that is," he whispered, speaking through his teeth so that he wouldn't be overheard by the third presence in their party.

With a smug smirk, Gestalt finished brewing the Flame Brews for each of them, and went back to the list to check what other ingredients he could find.

"If you've got nothing to do, you can come along with me and maybe somewhere along the way you'll actually be useful," he looked at Souichi like a troubled big brother figure forced to take care of his chaos sibling. "And, well, Chronos," he directed his next plan to the other more useful member of the party at the moment. "I'll work on the Moon Brew next."

Turning his focus around from his surroundings and to the list again, he read the name of the ingredients he needed now: Wailing Bats. Approaching it from another logical standpoint, Gestalt suspected that perhaps he could try to follow wailing sounds amidst the background music and other sound effects he had to listen to. He pulled up his game audio setting and lowered the background music as well as general ambience sounds while increasing the volume of specific sound effects. Once he spotted the wails, he followed them, found several wailing creatures that weren't bats stocked up along a shelf before finally finding the relevant items.

He grabbed what was needed, then went back to the brewing station to start on his next brew.

Chronos chose to ignore the other two players for now, slightly annoyed by Souichi's decision not to help them. At least it was going fairly quickly without him. It was tempting to only make two batches and leave Souichi to fend for himself, but they probably couldn't turn the quest in unless all three of them had enough sake. Shaking his head, he hummed to himself as he compiled the ingredients and worked at the first brew of the batch. For him, at least.

In no time at all, the [Shadow Brew]s were deposited in his inventory. Looking over at Gestalt as he announced his own intent, Chronos nodded once in agreement and understanding. "I'll get the Dew Brew." Now he just had to find the [Red Oni's Tears]. Wherever those were.

Moving back into the stock area, he walked up and down the aisles checking jars and items. Every liquid-filled jar he found wasn't correct. He found water and oils and things he'd never heard of. And a few things he wished he hadn't heard of. But then he found a few empty jars he could interact with, picking some up. Perhaps he had to go see whether he needed to interact with one of the surrounding NPCs? Slowly, he began to pick his way through the NPC's in the immediate area, looking for red ones specifically.

Eventually, he came upon a group of them cutting vegetables, one specifically... cutting onions. He could interact with that one, actually, and took out the jar and used it on the demon... receiving [Red Oni's Tears] in his inventory. Creative.

Crossing the room back to the stations, he began to work on the [Dew Brew]s.

Progress: Chronos has located [Red Oni's Tears] and is brewing [Dew Brew].

"Him?" whispered back the Twin Blade, turning his head slightly to regard the other player curiously before meeting his friend's gaze again, "Yeah. It happens. Can't really help it."

Souichi sighed. The world was once again conniving against him, as it usually did. It also didn't help that his "whisper" was as loud as his normal speech. Just with a hoarse timbre added to his voice.

"Just happened yesterday at work," added the boy, "Hayama-san was undressing me with her eyes too. I'm so tired of being objectified. I'm a person with feelings too, you know?"

He had nothing else to contribute to his friend's current dialogue, so the hacker wisely kept his mouth shut. He doubted Gestalt even believed that Souichi would be useful in this whole endeavor. He was practically allergic to this kind of chore. It was something that was well established between the two long-time friends. God forbid Tooru ever ask Souichi to get him something from the store. That was a surefire way into the land of disappointment.

Nevertheless, he followed his friend to the next destination. Which just so happened to be the direction where he came from. Huh.

And as soon as his companion spotted said relevant items, Souichi couldn't help but chuckle. So they WERE important! Glad his eyesight was still working. He didn't read the quest objectives wrong. So it was with that note that he followed his companion back to the brewing station.

"Besides, I'm not 'useless'," he said, with finger quotes, "I'm here to make sure WE don't fail this damn quest. And you know as well as I do that with me in this party, that's practically impossible."

He wanted to slam his forehead against Souichi's for being the absolute demonic gremlin he always were, but this was neither the time nor place to inflict real terror on the Twin Blade. He stubbornly clung to Gestalt, staying by his side to 'supervise' the party so they wouldn't fail the quest, in which Gestalt had to make faces at him yet again. He mostly didn't want Chronos to find out that they were talking about him, but Souichi had to hammer in his lacking awareness of his surroundings by replying to Gestalt in a loud voice.

"We're doing totally fine even without you having to oversee us, you know," he sighed exasperatedly as he was finishing up on his Moon Brews. He glanced at Chronos' direction, hoping he wouldn't notice them using him as a conversation starter. That was already kind of rude, but Souichi had done all but being remotely polite about it. Thankfully, Chronos seemed to not have taken notice of their talk, and announced that he was going to handle the next brew on the list to which Gestalt was grateful for. He nodded to confirm that he had gotten the message, and replied with the most sensible thing.

"Then I'll tackle the next item on the list, the Peach Brew."

He squinted a little at the ingredients needed for it, but it was something he had to do anyway. Love letter, for who? He tilted his head as he beelined towards a table where he had seen some parchment papers earlier, relieved to see that he could 'Write' on it. This signaled that he was on the right track for it. The player behind Gestalt clicked on the interaction button and saw a screen popped up on his display, indicating a field for him to type his messages in. When he typed in a 'Dear,' the parchment paper reflected the text that he wrote.

With a sigh, he proceeded to work on them knowing that Souichi was peeking over his shoulder.

Dear Whoever Is Going To Read this Letter,

You have no idea how good of a person you are, and how patient you are for putting up with a certain pain in the ass demon, strutting around like a useless manager walking around for his coffee during a busy day and goes back sitting on his stinky butt for the remaining working hours. The fact that you haven't beaten him up to a pulp says a lot about how you are as a person.

You are so attractive, and you have no idea how grateful I am that you're here.

He looked at Souichi with a deadpan expression, then placed it into the cauldron at the brewing station, letting it brew as he started on the second letter.

The name Souichi is too good for you. Requesting a name change to Little Pooperoo, which is more befitting for you if you think about it. Hellfire follows you wherever you go and that can't be a good thing, can it.

I guess I don't mind standing by you and having your back for as long as I can without you accidentally offing me or something. Can't believe I have to put up with your ass for this long of a time.

He looked at Souichi with a deadpan expression and repeated the motion, waiting on them to finish brewing. The party now had two Peach Brews.

Name: Brew for the Gods
Summary: You have entered the mysterious Moon Cave, but it seems everyone is too busy with preparations for Lord Orochi’s ceremony to pay you any mind. Cook, the resident chef in charge, on the other hand, is thrilled at the appearance of free labor and immediately puts you to work in creating the last item needed to complete Lord Orochi's feast: Ritual Sake. The quest is triggered immediately after stepping into the first subarea of Moon Cave. The chef npc will rush you down and demand your help in the kitchen. It is best you listen to his demands because remember: you're pretending to be some sort of Oni to get into the dungeon and you don't want any of the dungeon's residents to become suspicious of you! Unless you hide yourself, leaving and returning to the area will always draw Cook's attention and he will ask you for the progress of your task every time.

- The main ingredient to create each sake is as follows:
1. Flaming spider for Flame Brew - Gestalt is done brewing them 3/3
2. Caged Ghost for Shadow Brew - Chronos is done brewing them 3/3 [with much internal struggle]
3. Wailing Bat for Moon Brew - Gestalt is done brewing them 3/3
4. Red Oni's Tears for Dew Brew - Chronos has located the ingredients, starting the brew 0/3
5. Love Letter for Peach Brew - Gestalt has located the ingredients, writing them down and brewing them 2/3
6. Snow ChimChim for Snow Brew
7. Will-o-wisp for Cloud Brew
8. Yellow Sludge for Thunder Brew

Hearing Souichi's attempt at a "whisper" brought his attention over to the pair, but his gaze only lingered for a few moments before turning back to the task at hand with a roll of his eyes. He definitely hadn't been checking out Souichi, but they could believe whatever they wanted. He wasn't going to start a stupid argument that would probably just get used to wrongfully incriminate him.

Giving an exasperated sigh as he finished the [Dew Brews], he looked at the next one on the list. It seemed they were just leap-frogging from the last brew so he would be getting... The [Snow Brew], which required [Snow ChimChim]. Where the hell was he going to find snow ChimChims in the middle of a kitchen?

Glancing at the previous item on the list, he felt a bit of relief at having dodged a bullet there. No need to write love letters for him! He sucked at writing things like that.

Regardless, he needed to locate the [Snow ChimChim]s now. Venturing back toward the wall of cages, he inspected each for anything that looked like it might be the right item. And despite searching meticulously, it appeared that there weren't any Snow ChimChims... but there were some [Empty Cage]s. Which meant he'd need to go searching for them. "I'm getting the [Snow Brew]s," he told the other two as he passed them with cages in-hand, venturing out further into the field in search.

It took quite a few minutes, but eventually he located a pack of wild ChimChims, their white and light blue coloring a telltale indication of being the correct ingredient even before checking the UI. Phew. Now he just had to--but as he grew closer, they scurried away, bouncing and running frantically to escape.

Ah, so there sat the challenge.

Placing the cage on the ground, he walked away from the area, crouching down amongst a section of tall grasses. Sure enough, a few moments later the ChimChims began to wander back to the area. Once it seemed the most of them had gathered, he sprinted out of cover and into the midst of them, kicking one straight into the cage. The others scattered before he could get more, but he'd just have to repeat the process a few times to get what he needed.

Progress: Chronos has finished brewing the [Dew Brew] and is collecting the [Snow ChimChim]s.

"Little Pooperoo does accurately describe my cute butt," he said, casually providing unsolicited commentary to his friend's writing, "I'll have you know the hellfire is a feature, not a flaw. Makes me feel like some sort of Metroidvania hero."

Souichi continued reading through the contents of his friend's writing, his crimson gaze floating from word to word. Eventually, his eyes softened as his friend continued as he got to the conclusion of his friend's weirdly worded frustration piece. He could have sworn he read something similar in a report HR gave him a couple of years ago.

"So you do love me!" he concluded, as his friend finished penning the letter, "Awww, love you too buddy. But you ain't gonna get a letter back from me."

The grin on Souichi's face only served as the prelude to a coming headache.

"That's too much effort," said the Twin Blade, "Instead, I can sum up my feelings with some creative sign language."

And it was in that way that Souichi decided to give his friend the bird. Flipping Gesalt off in the most impassioned manner he could think of. Which was basically trying to copy the "sheesh" face.

In his periphery, he spotted their other party member approaching. He dropped his hands and posed in most "normal" stance he could think of. Hands to the side, standing at attention, without any reaction what-so-ever. Souichi gave Chronos an affirmative grunt as he nodded at him before the Flick Reaper disappeared to the other side of the field.

"Good guy, that one!" he said, jerking his thumb towards Chronos' direction, "Oh and yo, I got you guys for the last two brews."

Gestalt continued slapping his forehead with his hands repeatedly at every single remark and gesture he was served by none other than Souichi. He sighed for the umpteenth time that day, wishing Souichi hadn't reacted so obviously to Chronos being a helpful party member.

Now Gestalt had to remember to apologize to him later.

"Fine, I'll write myself one for the sake of finishing this quest and for the good of all humanity," he said to Souichi monotonously, but with a sincere appreciation for himself. He really felt like he should win something from the lotto one of these days for all the good karma he had gathered.

Dear Gestalt,

You're the best. Bestest of the best. You're a grandiose existence, with your soft fluffy hair and long fluttering lashes hidden behind the clear majestic lenses of your glasses. Serious need to be a narcissist here because someone didn't want to bother to be honest about how much he appreciates you. Maybe one of these days you're going to get many, many love letters to express how much of a heartthrob you are to the ladies around you.

With that, he threw the parchment paper into he cauldron at his brewing station and finished up on the final Peach Brew.

Seeing that Chronos was working on the next item on the list, he figured he would do the same. In order to do that, he started venturing random corners of the kitchen for Will-o-wisps to make Cloud Brews. Still sticking to his principle of doing things systematically, Gestalt patiently went through the shelves until he found blue, wispy flying orbs surrounding a big open container of water. These must be the will-o-wisps, he thought, as he recalled the media he had consumed about yokai using them as lanterns.

And true enough, once he interacted with one, a will-o-wisp appeared in his container as it faded from his view. Naturally he gathered enough for the brews before making his way back to the brewing station yet again.

With some effort, Chronos was able to acquire the [Snow ChimChim]s and return to the brewing station. Really, the only benefit to having other people on this quest was that he only had to complete half of the brews. It would have been less if their third party member was helping, but apparently that was beyond his mental capability. So Chronos just continued to ignore Souichi and regret his choice to be polite. It really was tempting to just not make one for the freeloader, but he had the sneaking suspicion that none of them would be able to turn the quest in if they didn't all complete it. Why else let them complete it in a group?

He sighed, setting each sake to one side as it was complete until the final one joined its companions. Well, at least it was simple enough once the components had been gathered. Now, what was the last one...? He frowned, checking the quest again.

[Yellow Sludge]. Disgusting.

Moving back amongst the vast wall of ingredients, he searched up and down for something that might indicate it contained the final item. Nothing jumped out at him, even in the section of liquid and semi-liquid jars. In fact, he didn't seem to find it anywhere and was about to give up when a quiet burbling noise sounded from his headset. Where was that...? He listened closer, turning up the SFX, and was able to slowly pick his way over to a series of barrels. The barrels were all leaking strange colors, their lids set off to one side. Ah. He peeked into each one, their contents apparently arranged in the order of a rainbow. Red... orange... ah, yellow. Sure enough, he took a jar and could interact with the barrel, acquiring [Yellow Sludge].

Filling some jars, he then turned and headed back to the brewing station to finish the last brew.

Progress: Chronos has finished brewing the [Snow Brew], has collected the [Yellow Sludge] and is brewing the [Thunder Brew].

Souichi tutted at his two party members turned brewers. He was shaking his head, scowling at the two with an expression that clearly expressed his annoyance at his two companions. He had stated that he was going to help and he was being ignored. Souichi didn't like that, not one bit.

"Seems like nobody was listening," said the Twin Blade, "I said, I'd handle the last two brews."

And with a snap of his fingers, the two other players would find their inventories stocked with the brews they were currently trying to finish. Was it magic? Yes, it was. The magic of rewriting game code. Was it legal? No. But he had spent the required amount of time it would take for the three of them to finish all eight brews. As far as Souichi was concerned, this was as ethical as hacking ever got.

He rolled his eyes at his best friend before sighing and walking back to the event entrance. FINALLY, they had everything, and Souichi was hungry. The cup of ramen he bought earlier wasn't going to eat itself after all.

"You really are a narcissist Too-kun," droned Souichi, his hands stuffed in his pockets as he avoided the yokai that seemed to be running all over the place, "Only paying attention to yourself, despite how much you pretend you don't. Tsk, tsk."
