All six of the players collected the ropes, and pulled. Ornery counted down. They all, collectively, let go, allowing the giant wooden beam to slam into the side of the bell.
The enormous bell - the bonsho - rang louder than any single temple bell Ornery had ever heard in his life while visiting a temple for New Years', but the tone was still remarkably clear, and the reverberation loud and deep. It grew quieter and quieter---but then, the decaying reverb picked back up, growing in intensity. The ground around the altar cracked, and the ominous purple clouds swirled above them. As Ornery realized that the altar itself was rumbling and threatening to rise from the ground, he jumped off and rolled away.
Whether everyone had successfully made it off the altar or not, Orochi's heads - and the altar itself - rose out of the ground, unveiling that the bell that they'd just rung belonged to none other than the raid boss they were there to slay. As the wicked winds howled louder, so did the oni around them, as delighted to see their master as they were terrified.
"
Who dares awaken me from my slumber?" The great serpent rumbled, all 8 of its heads coiling forth to look around the chamber. The head of flame tasted the air with its forked tongue, and focused its gaze on the party.
"
Outsiders?! You have brought me HUMANS?" Orochi bellowed, and only then did the oni realize that something was entirely amiss. The terrified monsters screamed and wailed their apologies to their Lord, scattering out of the chamber, sealing the door behind themselves, leaving only the party, the serpent, and the set-up banquet.
"Have you come to slay me, then? Foolish mortals are the same in every era, I suppose... In that case, this sacrifice will commemorate my awakening! Now, come, aspiring heroes! Show me what this era's wannabe-heroes are made of!"
[The bell rings. The Water head acquires divinity!]
[The bell rings. The Dark head acquires divinity!]
[The Water head is roaring!]
[The Lightning head is roaring!]
[Orochi slams the ground with his body, sending a shockwave through the arena!]
[The Wind head breathes cutting winds at Caduceus!]
[The Fire head breathes scorching flames at Ornery!]
"Oop! 'Scuse me!" Ornery rolled out of the way out of the gout of flame heading directly his way after hopping his way over the ground shockwave. Now he was in his element - dodging repeated attacks was far easier for him than dodging occasional attacks, once he'd gotten into the rhythm.
Ornery had been lucky enough not to get flinched, and so, he could still fight - though once he could actually take a moment to look at the serpent, he was momentarily stupefied by the sheer size of this lad.
"Now that's what I call an Orochi! Alright, you bastard, let's see how you fare with your brain split in eight portions..." Ornery cracked his knuckles, and pulled out his newly-reforged Heads&Tails - he'd had some grinding done before he went in, and had his weapon upgraded to level 48. The Light head was looking mighty vulnerable, and he was way, way overleveled for this particular battle. Way, way, way overleveled.
His current status wouldn't let him simply hang back and observe. He had to destroy this serpent. His mechanical wings extended, hardlight pinions manifesting behind his back one by one, and he took off towards the unsuspecting Light head in a speedy Sparrow Counter. Now that he had two stacks of his speed buff, he was confident in his ability to dodge whatever it would do next. He was not as confident about his party members, but... they were all relatively competent. They'd be fine.
Probably.
The amount of damage he did to the Light head with his Darkness-element weapons was nothing short of impressive - he hadn't killed it right off (not with that health bar, are you kidding?) but it wasn't looking good at all.
Ornery would remain hovering by the Light head for now, fully set on ferociously vibechecking the mighty serpent and seeing how high his damage numbers could go. The duty of getting the Water head drunk would fall to someone else.
Man, I hope I don't have to strategize this with them on the go...
